 Laughter Land Installation and AGTH
« Thread Started on Jun 21, 2009, 10:53am »

Although everything that this forum and others say about the installation of Langmoars game Laugher Land implies that it should be an easy installation, my sister and I have been having problems getting it to work with AGTH for the past few weeks. We have installed many games in the past and have all the proper programs, system settings, etc. that are needed for other games. Getting AGTH to work and extract text in the past has been challenging on occasion but after reading forums we have always solved the problem. Now however we are confronted with a serious problem--nothing we do will make the text extract properly and looking at every forum (including this one) makes it look like everyone has a perfect time installing this game. We are dying for some laughter in our lives! Hopefully the experts here can help us out.

The problem is simple--we cannot get the text hooker to extract a full sentence. For awhile the game also crashed around the time the first love possibility made his entrance but this problem has been fixed by a patch. This site gives no extra parameters so after we have installed the game, patched it, made a shortcut on the desktop and done all the other usual stuff, it should work fine. However, this has not been the case. Instead AGTH will not extract text despite the fact that it's supposedly 100% compatible. It's possible that there is something in the installation process that we are somehow doing wrong. If so, maybe someone who has installed this game in the past could give us a brieif description of what they did?
Now here is how we have tried to fix the problem:
1) Using downloads from many different sites both as torrents and directly.

2) adding different commands to bring up hidden text hooks and see if that helps in any way.

3) Changing all the various fonts in game and increasing the text speed.

4) mounting files other than the ccd. ones during installation in the hopes that the wrong thing was being used.

What all this really means is that we have run down our checklist of the usual solutions and come up short. Like I said earlier, we are not inexperienced in installating things which is why this is all so very confusing. I'm sure you all know what it is like to crave a game terribly, wanting it more than anything else, nya? :'( Please--give us some suggestions! We have no idea what else to try. But we are willingly to do anything so long as the game starts working with the anime games text hooker. Any help you can give is deeply appreciated. Thanks very much!

So none of the threads are extracting any text, or it has the missing characters problem?

As much as I'd like to help, my hands are pretty tied when I don't actually have the game in question. I'm hoping someone who has successfully installed Laughter Land can help.

AGTH extracts a character once but never again. So I'm pretty sure that's what you mean by a "missing" character problem.

I'm starting to wonder why I install and test games, only to have to reinstall and test them again, only to prove to myself I get the exact same result...

It works perfect. There are no missing characters. Install, update patch, noDisk patch, and I have everything right there in the 40F853 TextOutA thread (though there are about 5 TextOutA threads made, all the same... not a single one is missing characters).

Well currently only 2 hooks even show up once I install it but now that I have a clear idea of what I should be looking for, I'll retry the whole installation process and see if it goes anymore smoothly.

I've tried reinstalling the game using the exact process you described but the result is the same. Two hooks are all that show up and there are still missing characters. Your installation may have gone smoothly twice, however, that is clearly not happening in my case. I have absolutely no idea what the problem is...

Finally someone has described exactly the same problem that I have. Maybe it's the downloads we're using but in that case it'd sure be nice if the people that haven't had any problems would just give us the link they've used and walked us through the basic installation guidelines.

*sighs*

I feel like such a nooblet where these things are concerned. I installed mine from Aarinfantasy, combining two parts on the main disk with HJ split and it installed fine. I applied the no cd thingamajig so you'd think everything would work fine but it sure doesn't. Only two threads show up, the text is all wacko too.

By the by--I have some ideas right now and am working to see if its fixable. I'll let you know if I have success right away!

And the verdict is.....

No. I was trying to see if addiing the thread selection parameter would bring up the thread but no such luck. How do you bring up a thread that doesn't seem to be there? All that comes up are two GlyphOutofLineA threads.

Yeah I'm trying various downloads too. It's nice that someone else has the same problem (though I hope we both get our Laughter soon) ^^

Have you guys checked to see if there is a font aliasing option in the game? Kannagi no Tori had one of those and the correct threads would not display until that setting was changed in game: http://blgames.ukepile.com/database/kannagi/agth1.jpg

Since it's the same team that produced both games (just under different companies) it's possible they are using the same engine. Maybe mine comes up by default with that setting off, "remembering" from my registry what I set in KnT or something. But I really, really don't want to reinstall Laughter Land yet again just to check.

Don't worry, I have the game installed and will check right now to see if it works. Since I've already tried many different downloads from AarinFantasy it must be something simple. My sister has tried using the NoCD patch as an .ISO but that didn't work. Now I'll check and see if its something as simple as this. It's certainly one approach that neither one of us has tried.

After trying every single option in the setup menu, none of it worked. I might experiment more with the NoCD .ISO file thing in case that's somehow the problem and my sis just did something wrong. If that doesn't work then maybe researching problems with Kanagi no Tori will give me some clues. Who knows? If worse comes to worse I can always try downloading that and see what happens once I've gotten it working. My sister downloaded it though on here computer with the same results on every Laughter Land installation effort.

My computers still a sketchy after setting things back onto factory conditions a few months back so that it wouldn't be totally lost after something really bad happened. That's why I'm also updating DirectX and things while I'm at it. The two problems may be entirely unrelated but since my computer has been getting .dll errors alot (sure signs of a much needed Direct X update) I'll do those things too. Who knows? Maybe somewhere along the line my game will start working.

Still no luck on my front, I keep playing around with the Nodisk patch because somehow it must be a windows vista conflict. That's what we both have in common and since it worked on Ijiwaru My Master it shoould work on Laughterland somehow. The problem is that my current attempts are still unsuccessful though I am trying. Either way it's probably a conflict of some kind which explains why nobody else is having problems...

I can confirm that it is indeed a Vista compatibility issue, and not even right clicking properties to make the game run in compatibility mode with an older version of Windows will solve the problem.

I have the exact same issues you guys have with this game running on Vista. But it runs fine, capturing all the text, on my second computer, which runs on XP.

As an aside for anyone who has had the same problem I had with the game shutting down during the scene with Loddy in the library speaking to the landlord -- the problem lies in mounting any other file than the .cue file.

I don't think it matters on the first disc whether you mount the .ccd or the .img file, but on the second disc, you must mount the .cue file or the game will shut down.

I'm wondering if this could also be a problem with AGTH's inability to capture the game text on Vista. On my Vista computer, I mounted the .ccd files to install the game. Perhaps the text could be captured by mounting the .cue file of the 2nd disc instead of the .img or .ccd files.

It might work, it might not, but it's worth a try if you can't access a computer running on XP.
