[Book] The Perfect Boys Love Game Guide
« Thread Started on Aug 24, 2007, 12:28pm »

Title: 完全ボーイズラブゲームガイ| 89;
The Perfect Boys Love Game Guide

ISBN: 4778310276
Publisher: Ohta Shuppan
Pages: 128 (111 color)
Size: A4 (approx: 8-3/8" x 11-3/4")
MSRP: 1900 yen

For some reason the "do" in "gaido" won't come out :*( Anyhoo, I got this a few days ago because I found it on Akadot. It's like a "catalog" of all BL games up until the publishing date of 8.02.2006.* (It's an older book, but no one's mentioned it, so *shrug*)They show sample CG's, give a quick summary of the game, and introduce characters. It includes 18+ CGs, too. It's mostly color pictures; not much text at all. In the back are some interviews with Yura and Kana Tatana <3 and a list of all BL games to date.

I think you'd get a good idea of what the book's about from the Table of Contents (The numbers are the page numbers so you can get an idea of how much coverage the game got. The pink means it's a subsection.):
  • Introduction to BL Game Products
  • 10 Birdie ~Bokura no Renai Shinrigaku~
  • 13 Cafe Lindbergh ~Bokura no Renai Shinrigaku 2~
  • 16 AM 2:00 ~Neko to Tsukiyo no Branko~
  • 18 Puri Puri ~PRINCE x PRINCE~
  • 20 Oujisama Lv 1
  • 22 Oujisama Lv 1.5
  • 23 Oujisama Lv 2
  • 24 Ore no Shita de Akage
  • 26 FANATICA
  • 30 Torus ZERO
  • 32 Messiah
  • 36 Bara no Ki ni Nara no Hana Saku
  • 40 Kannagi no Tori
  • 44 Gakuen Heaven
  • 49 Soshite Bokura Wa
  • 52 Togainu no Chi
  • 56 Lamento ~BEYOND THE VOID~
  • 60 Hanamachi Monogatari
  • 64 SILVER CHAOS
  • 67 Artificial Mermaid ~SILVER CHAOS II~
  • 70 Sukinamono wa Sukidakara Shouganai!
  • 78 Angel's Feather
  • 82 Angel's Feather ~ Kohaku no Hitomi~
  • 84 STAMP OUT
  • 88 Invisible Sign -Isu-
  • 90 Invisible Sign -Isu- ~Nemureru Mori~
  • 92 Enzai
  • 96 Teikoku Sensenki
  • 100 Zettai Fukujyuu Meirei
  • 106 Suit o Nuida Ato...
  • 108 Kakure Zuki / Rakuenyuki / LIVE x EVIL ~Shakunetsu no Edema~ / LIVE x EVIL ~Nessa no Prometheus~
  • 109 Piyotan ~House Keeper wa Cute na Tantei~ / Rashiel no Hakoniwa ~Shounen to Kaihou no Jyumon~
  • 110 WHITE SHADOW / Bokura wa Minna, Koi o Suru
  • 111 ESCAPE / Sakurazaka Icchoume Ichibanchi / HEARTNER HEARTS
  • BL Game Special Talk
  • 112 L Shitaine / Laughter Land
  • 114 How to Make Character Designs and Pictures Kana Tatana x Yura
  • 118 How to Make a Story 1
  • 120 How to Make a Story 2
  • 122 Special Columns
  • 125 BL Game Database
The ink they use for this book is really, really smelly :P It bothers me and may be affecting my review of the book. I like the exclusive illustrations they commissioned for the book...but there aren't that many. Still, it's neat to see Yura incorporate a Kana Tatana character in her illustration and vice versa. The layout's really nice (the ink smells baaa~d) and is easy to look at. I think there's too many CG spoilers, though. The pages are on really nice thick, paper.

The interesting thing is that most, if not all, the games in the BL/Girl Game Recommendations thread received multiple page coverage. Another interesting thing is this book actually categorizes the games into one of the following categories:
  • Business
  • Fantasy
  • Romance
  • School
  • Suspense
  • SF
  • Other
I don't recall any other game magazines doing this?

It highlights different games form the B's Log BL Game Hakusho, which I guess I might review later. It almost looks like this book highlights the "good" games even if they are older, which may be why it covers so many from the recommended thread. I think that's cool. I hadn't heard of some of the games in the recommended thread. The B's Log one seems to concentrate on newer games.

Something about the description on Akadot made me think that they had kouryaku for all the games, but there's not any. There's not even game hints. It's basically just and eye candy catalog so you can drool over games you don't have yet.

In short, it's really a nice book and I'm glad I got it because there's lots of pretty pictures ^///^; It's nice to flip through and debate which game to get next!

*EDIT: I meant that they have a listing in the BL Games Database in the back of all commercial games ever published (according to them!).

What did you guys think of the book?

I've actually created some spreadsheets "categorizing" all BL and otome games for PC. Unfortunately, since I haven't played many games myself and wanted them to be as comprehensive as possible for release, I mailed copies to some friends to look over and still haven't heard back yet. -_-;; I really hope to release these data sheets soon though.

Mastress Alita> I read that you were making a categorization sheet in the Recommendations thread, so I thought maybe this book would help you :) I didn't know that you were already practically done!

It'll be neat to see how your categories are the same or different from this book :)

Maybe you should write a BL game book? GoComi is publishing a book about a girl visiting Japan...they publish a lot of yaoi...so I think there's a good possibility they might publish one if you wrote one? Since you know so much and all :)

EDIT: ...and since you have most of it already written up in electronic format here? It'd just be like cut and paste for you!

Heh, what people don't realize is I've played hardly any BL games. I've actually only played the games that I've reviewed, just a speck of the total amount of BL games out there. So I definitely wouldn't say I'm any expert. My datasheets are completed, but for information I had to basically just go off of Atlas translations of Getchu summaries and sample CGs. Since I've played so few games, it's impossible for me to add all the proper category tags, which is why I wanted some of my friends who have played a large amount of games to see if they could find any corrections or additions before I put them up for download. (*coughs* If I could release them this weekend Hes and Kaoru, I'd really like too before school starts for me...)

My info sheets (Excel spreadsheets) that I will be making available will have the following information on them:

Company (linked to the company website if it is still available)
Game title (linked to the Getchu page if there is one)
Game type (ADV, SLG, RPG, etc.)
Main genre (this is like a "book" genre... School Romance, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Supernatural, etc.)
Sub-genres (these are for categorizing certain character types or fetishes within games, for example: Nekomimi, Shota, Sensei, Incest, Rape, Multi-pairing, etc.)
Art: Artist name if available (linked to their Erogamescape page)
Scenerio: Scenerio writer name if available (linked to their Erogamescape page)
Recommends: A count of recommends based on recommendation lists I've received from people.

The idea is hopefully this will make it easier for people to try to find games they may be interested in and to quickly get links to further information about a game. My total game cateloging project took... about 1 month total work for my bishoujo game info list, about 2 days for my BL game list, and 1 day for my otome game info list. (In other words, aside from the AGTH testing project, this was my other "big project" over this summer)

I wouldn't say that book covers 'all' BL games up to that date, but it does cover some of the best...and even some that still aren't released. ~cough~ Torus ZERO, WHITE SHADOW ~cough~ >>

Mastress Alita> Well, it still seems like a LOT of games from my point of view! It's way more than I've played :)

The sub-genres part sounds really, really cool! Nekomimi and Kimono for me XD I can't wait to see them :)

Sakura> Oh, I'm sorry! I was thinking in my head but only some of it came out, but if I fix it, then your comment won't make sense...I'll just add a note on the bottom :) The BL Game Database part in the back lists all the BL Games ever commercially made (well, that's what it claims). Did you like the book, too?

Wha? Oh no I haven't read it (didn't mean to come off as sounding that way) I was just saying from looking at the table of contents I noticed some games weren't on there. ^^"

Ya, I noticed Apocripha/0 wasn't in the contents. A shame, that's still my favorite game targetted to female gamers. ^_^;; (Maybe they didn't count it cause it's "heavily implied" BL only?)

Sakura> Oh. I hoped you wrote that because you had the book, too. I think two reviews are way better than one, so :)

Mastress Alita> I think you might be right. All the games that received multiple page coverage are undoubtedly BL and mostly 18+. Their teeny tiny blurbs about the Apocriphas (I think I found 3 blurbs) all mention that it's "BL flavored" instead of just "BL." On a related note...B's Log counts Apocripha as BL, too...

Still, there are way more "undoubtly BL" games out than the index there lists. Just look at the size of Mastress BL release list and compare it to the index and it's obvious xD For example, none of the 3 million games by Marine Heart is listet.

Nya, I actually have this now. It's a nice reference book for bl game stats/info and eye candy, but that's about it. ~_~'

I think it also has different covers? My cover has Luise and Kia from Zettai and Akira from Togainu all in their Nazi-esque uniforms (Saku fetish moment ~drool~), and Luise and Kia with Asato from Lamento on the back. I also thought I saw a cover of the same book with Teikoku Sensenki charas on it as well tho...

Thank you for adding your opinion :) I think the more opinions people write about it, the better!

That's cool that it comes with different covers. Mine has the same cover as you (it's Konoe on the back, tho...?). I like the idea of having different covers, but the only bad thing about that is you want *BOTH* covers...argh. Somedays I feel like the perfect consumer. Show it to me, and I'll want it.

I didn't get to pick my cover though. I ordered it online and they just sent me one and it happened to have the same cover as the one they had pictured. When they have books like that on Amazon, they don't let you pick covers either :P
