Does anyone else have one? It makes me sad that so many of the good games are on the PS2 and I can't talk about them with anyone because of the god freaking region protection crap. (what the hell sony? Just because you don't want us playing games that aren't translated T_T)
By the way, on a seperate note, I think the PS3 is region free, but does anyone know if it plays japanese PS2 games well.

I have a Japanese compatible PS2 and a few games, however, I rely on AGTH for playing most if not all of my games so that pretty much rules the PS2 out. I have a fair amount of Japanese under my belt, but I refuse to slog through games only half understanding what's going on. I gave up those days long ago. Plus I learn a lot more/get better Japanese practice by using AGTH.

Really? I love the AGTH to death since it saves me a lot of work, but I'm not so sure if it helps my japanese. On the contrary, I end up getting lazy cause I only have to translate little bits and pieces myself. XD
But I know what you mean. It still takes me a long time to translate my games, and I always have to have a dictionary nearby XD. Well, I actually write out the storyline as I go along. I'm not good enough at japanese that I can remember what the heck I just finished reading two paragraphs before hand, so I usually end up typing up my translations as I go along, get to the end of the game, then start a new game and play through it again without stopping every three seconds.
Well, it's just that recently there's been like a giant influx of otome games on the PS2. I don't know what happened. It's like all the companies decided to release their games all at once T_T I'm poor enough as is...

Hello! Nice to meet you I love squeeing about games, too
I have J-PS2 console and I love it, only the TV screen I use to play on isn't very good and so everything is a bit blurry and it's hard to see (and to read text on) ...so I end up playing PC games more because the picture is sharper.
About the J-PS3 from what I heard it's region free for all PS3 games, but for PS2 and PS games it's still region encoded...so if you had a US-PS3 then you could play J-PS3 games, but not J-PS2 or J-PS games.
It's just hard to find time to play games. The last PS2 games I've played are Yojinbo (and I didn't finish that) and Last Escort (which I didn't finish either).
I've noticed all the PS2 games, too! Like Otomate is going crazy! Still...some of them kind of seem like "filler"....

Aw man. Shoot, I was hoping the PS3 wouldn't have any region coding that way I could play my PS2 games as well... T_T Oh well...
I play most of my games on the PS2 since they have all the extras <3
About Otomate... *cough* It's not like I buy all their games religiously just because I love the artwork to death and I'm loyally devoted to the company... *cough* >_>

I agree Otomate has great artists
...and maybe I'm wrong about the PS3. I didn't get my information from Sony. It was just from some website...which was enough to make me ask for a J-PS2 instead of a J-PS3 (well, that and the price XD).
Speaking of Consoles...I think the first otome game for the Wii is Harukanaru Toki no Nakade right? I wonder how that's going to work? It makes me wish I had a Japanese Wii...but it was hard/expensive enough to just get an American one, so...

Oh, it's fine. Harutoki 4 is coming out for the Wii and PS2, so I'm just getting the PS2 version XD

I'm really curious about the Wii version of Harutoki...but I'm going to get the PS2 Treasure Box first, of course...but the Wii version (I mean what are they going to make you do with the Wii Remote?!) ...do you think that Free Loader thing will work on Harutoki so you can play it on an American Wii? Maybe I should put this in another thread...maybe later...

Hm, I'm not sure. I've only ever played imported games for the PS2, never my Wii... sorry ^^;

I also have a J-ps2 and a blurry tv, but having the J region is great (even though I don't like Last Escort that much and TMGS2 is never shipping... ;_;) plus then I can play other Asian games if I want (like PUMP!) and watch DVD's.
But it is true about region-free only being for PS3 games... So if you have a US region PS2 I recommend you get a Japan region PS3 unless you need the Blu-Ray for US region (because that is region-encoded as well... argh!). On the other hand, there are modded or imported PS2's up on ebay every now and then.

Or you can avoid both expensive mods and import PS2s and just use a swap disc. >>' (You didn't hear that from me)

True. My housemate uses one of those, but it freaked me out too much when he wrenched out the disc tray.
Although to be honest, the reason I had the luxury of buying an import was because for US games I can use my brother's PS2. That way, if mine breaks (I heard the thin models break more quickly - one downside), I can still play domestic games and vice versa.
If you live in NY, there's a place that sells modded PS2's for a bit more than the cost of one import, but I haven't comparison shopped so I don't know if it's the best deal.
Why can't the US follow Australia's lead and ban region protection? Argh...

Well, it's only according to Wikipedia... I haven't tried confirming it elsewhere, but yeah... \(^o^)/

I'm slightly afraid to use a swap disk, seeing as how you kinda...open the top of the disk container and I'm sure that's not supposed to normally be done XDD But it's too late anyways, I already blew off 200 dollars on my JP PS2 XP
