 Site Update 08/16/09
« Thread Started on Aug 16, 2009, 6:37pm »

As promised, I managed to get my website updated this summer! (Okay, so /barely/... school starts here on the 25th... eep).

First, I want to thank those that submitted fanwork to site... all... two of them. Halcyon submitted a Silver Chaos fanfic, "Beloved Voice", and Sakura submitted a Fanatica fanart of Souha, both of which are on the Fanworks page. And for those that did not see my cool Boys' Love Games Headquarters t-shirts at YaoiCon 2007 featuring our mascot Kaoru, designed by Batpig, he has now been added to the Fanworks page as well (ya, I really wanted more stuff for the fanworks page for this update...). Remember that I am still taking submissions at blghqfanworks@gmail.com (not just for the summer, but for ever and ever!)

Second, after years of working on the game (I wish that was an over exaggeration...), I have finally completed Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku! Srsly! THE PROOF! Oh ya baby... oh ya. *does a little happy dance* And finally after a week of writing up character information, and a big ol' page of organizing all the notes I took while playing the game into a separate section of spoiler information, and re-writing that into something legible (hopefully), and then saving the 115 CGs and writing the review and all that jazz... I FINALLY HAVE A WEBSITE UPDATE! *does another little happy dance* So go check it out and let me know what you think. If you /really/ love it, you could give me fanwork... *nudge nudge wink wink* ^_~

You'll notice this review actually has a totally separate section for the spoiler info, which is something no other review has. Basically this was because I had so much spoilerific information when I was going through my notes that if I simply put it in black text on the main review, I'd have some huge blocks of black text separating out the characters, and it would've looked awful icky, so I decided to just stick it all on a separate document. I liked it so much I'm thinking of maybe going back and doing that on all my reviews, but looking back on my others ones, I also notice that most of my other ones also only include very little blocks of spoiler info below the main info that doesn't really "split up" the character information much to begin with anyway, so maybe I'll just leave the existing reviews as is anyway (with the exception maybe being "Lasting Snow", which looked a bit chunkier than the others). Any opinions?

Anyway, as much as a pain getting through BaraBara was, I did truly enjoy it. I particularly really liked Mayumi's back story, and dammit if I only had more time, I'd love to write a little ficlet for the guy... if only I had more time. I don't want to give out any spoilers here (if you really, REALLY want to know you can read it in the Bara Spoiler document on the review) but let's just say his back story deals with a theme you don't typically see dealt with in media much, and it sure made me want to explore him more. I really thought I wasn't going to be going back to school next semester, which would have given me more time for gaming/fanficing/what have you, but then I got a scholarship so things changed and back to the grind it is... ah well.

Well, if you have any comments, please let me know. If you've actually played the game and have any questions about the story, feel free to ask me now while I still have some memory of it, and I'll do my best to answer them. Just be wary that this message board is free and therefore somewhat crappy and doesn't have spoiler tags, so please change your text to black if you are asking spoilerific questions to respect those that don't want spoiled.

Yes! I has submitted the only Fanatica fanwork on the entire site. Though I'd argue the only fanwork that exists in general ....seriously, I can hardly even find the -Japanese- fandom for this game. ; ; Ah well, I'm working on the translation... slowly but surely.

BaraBara definitely sounds like my kind of game, but after Fanatica, another dark, multi-pairing, few to no choices game that could potentially take me several years to complete is not high on my list right now. @_@ I'm struggling to keep interest in Garnet Cradle as it is. Alas, I'm a BL person at heart, so I can only stomach otome games so much.

I thought it was interesting you didn't include any mention of the Fandisk or the Treasured Edition in your review, sort of covering the whole package. There's also a PS2 version if I recall... but if 90% of the game is ero CGs, I wonder how that turned out. XD Actually, I wonder that about the majority of BL games 'cleaned up' for PS2. >_>'

You really don't run into games with 'partial voice' much anymore, in fact I can hardly recall ever playing one. To be honest, I'd rather have a game have no voice at all, because then I have nothing to compare it to- i.e. Magia Mystica, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

I'm going back to school next month as well, but I'm going to try and keep playing games to help me with second year Japanese and vice versa. Ah, so many games to play, such little time. ><

I have no idea what monstrosity the Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku PS2 game must be... probably some nightmarish creation like the all-age OreShita game. I did read on IGN that apparently Kaname was "beaten up by thugs" -- apparently all traces of rape had disappeared from the PS2 version, which would pretty much ruin half the premise of the entire game. O_o Batpig and I were making jokes about that on MSN last night... "Don't tell me, they turned it into a... HIGH SCHOOL ROMANCE? NOOOOOOOOOO!" "So let me guess... the 'mystery' is figuring out who left a love letter in his locker, right?" *hangs head trying to imagine the horrors of Barameki Hanamemorial*

As far as the partial voice, ya, it is pretty rare these days. Though, I think a newer game being released without voice -- like Magia Mystica -- is even more rare (I'm really mystified by that one). I kinda personally prefer all-or-none in my games myself too, and really wonder why BaraBara never received a full voice version itself, when that so-called "treasured edition" was released not long ago... it's really the perfect candidate (since my assumption as to why it probably wasn't full voice to begin with was given the age of the game, was the space needed for all the voice files... there is A LOT of story, so at that time it would've had to have been probably 5 disks long to voice the whole thing, making it too expensive too produce, and that was back before DVD media and DVDROM drives were the norm). But now that DVD media and DVDROM drives ARE the norm, I don't see why the title didn't become a candidate for a full voice release... unless the seiyuus were opposed to doing the humiliation stuff (I noticed the humiliation route scenes were pretty much all non-voice, while the love route were all voiced).

I had no time to play the fandisk... ISU's fall semester starts a week from Tuesday (August 25th... I can't even play a fandisk that fast, sadly). The treasured edition, from my information, was just the regular game and the fandisk sold together in a special package (maybe with a drama CD or something) and didn't even have any other special contents (as far as game content, they were the exact same, no new CGs, no full voice, etc). I tell myself every semester that I wish I could play games (albeit slowly) and work on semester work at the same time, but the amount of reading and homework is always just too much and it just never happens. >_< Usually by the time I finish my textbook reading for the day I'm so exhausted I don't want to do ANY reading, including reading fantasy novels, BL games, or anime subtitles, all things I normally enjoy, go fig. :-P
